What to Do When Your Teeth Hurt?: Tooth Pain Relief
Tooth pain can be completely unpredictable and sometimes strikes at the most inconvenient times, such as during a business trip or vacation. Often, patients do not have the immediate opportunity to visit a dentist, but the discomfort from severe pain can be nearly unbearable. In this case, the main task is to find a way to alleviate the discomfort and promptly plan a visit to the dentist.
Why Does Severe Toothache Occur?
Pain is almost always a symptom of an inflammatory process and does not occur without a reason. One of the most likely causes is pulpitis, which often follows untreated cavities. In this condition, the pulp—the soft tissue filling the tooth cavity, which contains many nerve endings—becomes inflamed. This causes pain that typically worsens when lying down, often resulting in nighttime pain episodes. With pulpitis, the pain is sharp and pulsating, and it can radiate to neighboring teeth, the ear, or the throat.
Severe toothache is also commonly associated with periodontitis, an inflammation of the tooth root apex. In addition to painful sensations, periodontitis can cause gum swelling, cysts, and pus discharge. Acute pain can also result from mechanical trauma to the tooth or surrounding tissues. Tooth hyperesthesia or increased sensitivity can cause pain that passes quickly but is quite uncomfortable.

The Dangers of Severe Toothache
Self-medicating for pain relief provides only temporary relief, and the pain will eventually return. This can lead to chronic pain, an exacerbated inflammation, and significant health issues. You risk losing the tooth if the underlying disease causing the pain is not treated. The sooner you schedule an appointment with a specialist, the easier and quicker the treatment will be.
How to Relieve Tooth Pain at Home
Of course, the best option is not to self-medicate but to seek help from a dentist who will diagnose the issue, determine the cause of the pain, and propose a treatment plan. However, I understand that it’s not always possible to visit the doctor immediately, so here are some home remedies to alleviate pain until your appointment:
- Rinses with Medicinal Herbs: Herbs like sage, oregano, oak bark, chamomile, and calendula can be effective.
- Pain Relief Medications: Take pain relievers cautiously, avoiding strong medications or antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription.
- Massage Certain Body Points: Specifically, the area on your hands between the index finger and thumb.
- Compresses: Use cold compresses (never hot, as heat can worsen the pain).
To distract yourself from the pain, try focusing on a hobby or work. Active engagement is beneficial, while lying down can increase pressure on the painful tooth, intensifying the pain. If the pain is triggered by external conditions like temperature changes in the mouth (hot tea after cold ice cream), eliminate such triggers and avoid chewing on the painful side.

Remember, self-treatment can have serious consequences, and home remedies only reduce symptoms without addressing the underlying issue causing the pain. Therefore, the pain will inevitably return unless you see a dentist in time.
